Breakfast Reception for Canadian NGOs
23 February 2011
The Canadian NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) were invited to a breakfast reception at Canada's Permanent Mission to the UN located at 1 Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, 885 Second Avenue - not too far from the UN Headquarters, and a pleasant walk on this crisp, sunny Wednesday morning.
After checking in at the reception desk, we were directed to the elevators that took us to the 14th floor and the security "cage" which is a glass encased area into which several people step before the door behind you closes. Then the door ahead of you opens and in you go to the reception room.
There was a hot and cold buffet with a selection of delicious breakfast foods. Those of us who could not handle plates, juice glasses, purses and tote bags ended up sitting on the floor to eat! Later a few chairs were brought in.
The Minister of Status of Women, Rona Ambrose, was not present and Suzanne Clement did the honours in her stead. The new Canadian Ambassador to the UN in New York, Gilles Rivard, welcomed us and gave his remarks including his best wishes for a productive two weeks at 55th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
